What does the Apple MFI certification mean?
Apple introduced the Lightning cable in 2012 for charging and syncing their latest iPhones, iPads and iPods. Third party companies such as Talmo are allowed to sell Lightning cable that are certified by Apple guaranteeing that they operate the same as the original Apple Lightning cable.
Why are MFI Lightning cables different and how does this affect our price?
Inside each lightning connector is hardware exclusively manufactured by Apple. This includes a tiny authentication chip that tells your device it’s Apple MFI Certified and a chip that is responsible to charge your iOS device in the correct way, hence avoiding damaging your device. Without these hardware components you risk damaging the charging chips on your iOS device. Additionally you may notice warning message on your phone when a non-MFI cable is detected.
What is the MFI certification for?
The MFi certification allows third-party hardware accessories that use Apple's MFi licensed technology to connect electronically to iPhone, iPad, iPod and Apple Watch. The most famous MFi licensed technology are:
- HomeKit technology
- Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Module
- Lightning and 30-pin connectors
- AirPlay audio technology
- CarPlay technology
Is Talmo an MFI certified manufacturer?
No, Talmo does not need to join the MFi Program in order to sell MFi lightning cables. However Talmo plans and designs the MFI lightning cable and sources it from an MFi Manufacturing Licensee. The Manufacturing Licensee is authorized to manufacture goods for Talmo and will take responsibility for all program requirements on Talmos behalf.
Verifying Authorized MFi Manufacturing Licensees and Licensed Accessories
Once a Lightning-based accessory has completed MFi self-certification requirements and is reported to Apple as distributed by the manufacturer, it will be searchable in a public database of authorized Lightning-based MFi accessories.
How does the testing and approval procedure work?
During the approval process, you must submit samples of your cables to Apple's independent testing facility to undergo mechanical, stress, and electrical tests. Additionally, every single cable we produce is tested twice during production to make sure, that there are no defects and that every cable meets the Talmo and Apple MFI quality standards.
The Talmo Quality
We have given a lot of effort not only to put the “Made for iOS” logo on the unique packaging, but also in providing you with the exact and unique fashionable colors. But it’s absolutely worth it. Our cable with the MFI certification symbolizes almost two years of hard work going back and forth between Apple and our own manufacturers to get our product just the way we imagined it.
